I read a book a long, long, long time ago by Starhawk that was attempting to answer your question. I read it so long ago that I can’t remember the plot but I remember the feeling of hope/joy/love I felt reading it. It was called The Fifth Sacred Thing. Have you read that? It was around the house forever. Don’t think I have it any more though. Otherwise I would lend it to you.
I've been eagerly awaiting comments and book recommendations addressing your question 'What does a non-apocalyptic culture-and-planet flourishing future look like?' Perhaps other readers are struggling with that as much as I am. (Though I see there are over 100 utopian novels listed on Wikipedia: perhaps it's time for me to re-read Aldous Huxley's Island). In the meantime, you presented the quesstion as a challenge for yourself too -- so don't hold back!
Hi John, I've been hoping for comments and book req's too! My friend Forrest did email to say he wonders why people are so pessimistic (himself included) when our life expectancy and quality of living have improved so much. So there's one response! I feel like there must be books. Probably obvious ones!
Oh yeah, I did read that and then showed up in the Bay Area and was like, where is my star hawk utopia?
